Keywords: Topology preserving Self-organizing map Growing cell structures Visualization methods Delaunay triangulation The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) is a neural network model that performs an ordered projection of a high dimensional input space in a low-dimensional topological structure. The process in which such mapping is formed is defined by the SOM algorithm, which is a competitive, unsupervised and nonparametric method, since it does not make any assumption about the input data distribution. The feature maps provided by this algorithm have been successfully applied for vector quantization, clustering and high dimensional data visualization processes. However, the initialization of the network topology and the selection of the SOM training parameters are two difficult tasks caused by the unknown distribution of the input signals. A misconfiguration of these parameters can generate a feature map of low-quality, so it is necessary to have some measure of the degree of adaptation of the SOM network to the input data model. The topology preservation is the most common concept used to implement this measure. Several qualitative and quantitative methods have been proposed for measuring the degree of SOM topology preservation, particularly using Kohonen's model. In this work, two methods for measuring the topology preservation of the Growing Cell Structures (GCSs) model are proposed: the topographic function and the topology preserving map.

Enhanced Data Topology Preservation with Multilevel Interior Growing Self - Organizing Maps
This paper presents a novel architecture of SOM which organizes itself over time. The proposed method called MIGSOM (Multilevel Interior Growing Self-Organizing Maps) which is generated by a growth process. However, the network is a rectangular structure which adds nodes from the boundary as well as the interior of the network. The interior nodes will be added in a superior level of the map. Co...
متن کاملRelations between generalized fractal dimensions and Kohonen's self-organizing map
In this paper we present a method to improve the learning results for diierent data sets, which earlier were diicult or impossible to learn, and to criticize the map's development during learning. Calculating the generalized fractal dimensions of the data set we choose the map's dimension accordingly for guaranteeing the maps ability of topology preservation. Furthermore we explore diierent sta...
متن کاملGreen Product Consumers Segmentation Using Self-Organizing Maps in Iran
This study aims to segment the market based on demographical, psychological, and behavioral variables, and seeks to investigate their relationship with green consumer behavior. In this research, self-organizing maps are used to segment and to determine the features of green consumer behavior. This was a survey type of research study in which eight variables were selected from the demographical,...
متن کاملTopology Preservation in Fuzzy Self-Organizing Maps
One of the important properties of SOM is its topology preservation of the input data. The topographic error is one of the techniques proposed to measure how well the continuity of the map is preserved. However, this topographic error is only applicable to the crisp SOM algorithms and cannot be adapted to the fuzzy SOM (FSOM) since FSOM does not assign a unique winning neuron to the input patte...
متن کاملGrowing a hypercubical output space in a self-organizing feature map
Neural maps project data from an input space onto a neuron position in a (often lower dimensional) output space grid in a neighborhood preserving way, with neighboring neurons in the output space responding to neighboring data points in the input space. A map-learning algorithm can achieve an optimal neighborhood preservation only, if the output space topology roughly matches the effective stru...
